About the Publication

Through the clearing of forests for farming, greenhouse gas emissions from soil and usage of chemical inputs, emissions from livestock, and more, agriculture contributes to climate change. In India, agriculture and the growing demand for forest products have put the country’s forests under tremendous pressure. To reverse this trend, Rabo Foundation and USAID collaborated with local financial institutions to support financing for the sector. This case study documents how a loan portfolio guarantee scheme as part of the collaboration enabled these local financiers to provide capital to SMEs and cooperatives for agroforestry, sustainable forest management and low-emission agriculture.
